What is a Started Bernedoodle Puppy?

A Started Bernedoodle Puppy is an older puppy who stays with us beyond the traditional 8-week go-home age to receive additional socialization, structure and foundational training. Our Started Puppy Program continues through approximately 20 weeks of age, giving puppies an additional 12 weeks to mature, learn and develop important skills before transitioning into their new homes. This program is especially popular with families who love the idea of a puppy but would prefer to skip much of the very demanding 8–16 week stage.

During weeks 8–16, our puppies live on a consistent daily schedule and are started on crate training, potty training, learning to settle, bite inhibition and appropriate household manners. They receive weekly professional grooming and continued socialization in controlled environments with puppies, adult dogs, cats and people. These early weeks are an important developmental period, and our goal is to give each puppy positive experiences while helping them develop confidence and adaptability.

From approximately 16–20 weeks, puppies participate in our basic obedience boot camp. During this stage, crate training is completed, puppies are established on a strong potty routine and they continue developing a solid foundation in basic obedience. They work on commands and skills including sit, come, stay, place, play and wait, and are introduced to heel and loose-leash walking. Puppies also gain experience with car rides and appropriate socialization in public environments.

By approximately 20 weeks old, our Started Puppies have considerably more experience, maturity and foundational training than an 8-week-old puppy. However, it is important to understand that a Started Puppy is not a fully trained adult dog. They are still young puppies who will continue learning as they mature. Changing homes also means adjusting to a new family, schedule, environment and expectations, so consistency and continued reinforcement from their new family are essential.

Throughout their time with us, puppies are professionally groomed and receive all age-appropriate veterinary care and vaccinations. Our goal is to send home a confident, well-socialized puppy with a strong training foundation that families can continue building upon for years to come.
